Cor Nequam

Once I decided to follow my heart
And it led me along a darkened path
All mist and exotic night blooms
The heady fragrance beguiling, enticing
The siren call of a forbidden wonder

The quickened pulse, the clenched belly
Dilated eyes and pinpricked flesh
Not in delight but as an instinct, a warning
The beauty ahead spurious, deceptive
A shadowy mirage cloaking a wretched fate

The illusion dissolved swiftly as the trap sprung
Blanketing everything in its radius
With a syrupy perfume not of life, but death
Delicate blooms burst to blood-stained petals swirling
Pursuing my crippled feet as I stumbled back toward the light

The heart is desperately wicked
Who can know it?

β€œThe human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?
10 But I, the Lord, search all hearts
and examine secret motives.
I give all people their due rewards,
according to what their actions deserve.”
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NLT
